Summer Sun RoboFun® Workshop Schedule |
Don't Just Play it, CREATE IT!
Build your own robot and create your own adventures in our Summer Sun RoboFun workshops. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how robots and games are made by designing your own! Each week students can sign up for 3 hours of Robotics in the morning or 3 hours of Computer Game Design, Claymation, Web Design or Wearable and Digital Crafting classes in the afternoon. Sign up for the morning and afternoon session and your child can stay for the whole day. Playing games will never be the same as your child learns how to research, program, and invent characters of their own design.
LEGO® Mindstorms® RCX Robotics
Over a week of Summer Sun, RoboFun® instructors will guide participants in the creation of three different robotics projects using the LEGO® mini computer, motors, sensors, and different design attachments. Students practice giving robots instructions to complete tasks using an intuitive programming environment called Robolab. Final projects are presented by students to parents on the last day of the week.
Animation & Game Design with Scratch: Animate it! Design it! Program it! Play it!
In the *ALL NEW* RoboFun® Animation and Game Design with Scratch workshop, students create their own animations, interactive stories, games, music and art that others can interact with and play. Scratch is a new programming language made specifically for kids; it's free and downloadable for home use. Projects can also be posted to the Scratch website for others around the world to play!

Each week conforms to this schedule. You may sign your child up for one or more weeks of RoboFun. Unless indicated, classes are Monday through Friday.

We Wear It Well! Wearable and Digital Crafting Workshop
In our new RoboFun offering, students will use the PicoCricket Kit to invent interactive jewelry, creatures that dance or chirp, musical sculptures and much more! The PicoCricket Kit is similar to the LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ robotics kits. MINDSTORMS is designed especially for making robots, while the PicoCricket Kit is designed for making artistic creations with lights, sound, music, and motion. You can plug lights, motors, sensors, and other devices into a PicoCricket, then program them to react, interact, and communicate.
Favorite past projects have included a confetti party hat triggered with a touch sensor remote; an interactive friendship belt that flashes different colors and plays music when it finds it's mate; and a tabby cat that meows when pet exactly in the right spot!
Claymation Animation Workshop!
Design and direct your own stop-motion animated masterpiece! In the spirit of Wallace and Gromit and The Nightmare Before Christmas, students will first work in groups to sculpt characters out of modeling clay & other everyday items. Then they will design & build sets with Lego® and other media. Finally, participants will use digital cameras and stop motion animation software to bring their creations to life and produce their own short claymation video. Families are invited to a showcase of student films on the last day of the workshop! Participants will take home their clay characters and a copy of the final DVD.

Design and develop your very own website! In this class, students get an opportunity to learn the programming that goes along with website making. Students pick a topic of interest, research that topic, and build a multi-page website with links and images. Start your web design career today! Websites will be published on the VEM website, if requested.
